The Walrus Brighton

Last weekend myself and Mark had a trip to Brighton.

As you know by now, we love travel and food so when we made plans to visit The Walrus we couldn’t contain our excitement.

You’ll also be aware that I am a HUGE lover of vintage, antique items and eclectic interiors. The Walrus in Brighton mixes the old with new but doing so very nicely.

My plan is to complete the article very soon containing the best places to visit in Brighton but I couldn’t just do that after visiting the Walrus. This place also deserves a post of its own.

So what’s on offer here? A three course meal for lunch or dinner? Or perhaps you fancy popping in for quick sandwich break? They also cater for vegans, vegetarians, and have gluten free options so everyone can enjoy the delights that The Walrus has to offer.

They also have burlesque, cabaret and circus acts scheduled so if you fancy the whole experience I’ll leave all links below to book.

On arrival my eyes were drawn to all the amazing vintage pictures hanging on the walls, luggage cases on the ceilings in the downstairs bar, old books on the shelves that we read for a short while. One item that captured my imagination were the old boxing gloves hanging on the wall. Incredible to see how they have changed over the years.

I couldn’t help but wonder who decided to ‘hang up their gloves’ prior to them being hung up on the wall at The Walrus.

We do love a good book!

The staff are extremely friendly on arrival and were also throughout our visit. We were directed upstairs to the restaurant where we were greeted by Naomi whom looked after us extremely well throughout our time at The Walrus.

We didn’t immediately sit at our table, I wanted to explore. The interior had so much character that I couldn’t ignore the detail in every corner of the restaurant.

Each wall had mirrors, 17th & 18th century portraits, each telling a different story, flowered wallpaper that surrounded the beautifully decorated fireplace, and gorgeous hanging red velvet drapes which were tidied back with the bank holiday sunshine beaming through to the chandeliers.

Not one upholstered chair was the same. Every table was different, the tables and chairs had characters of their own.

We sat directly by the window so we had full view of the large dining table fit for royalty. It all looked pretty amazing. A step back in time but with the modern twist of the food menu.

The Food

We had such a brilliant choice of food to drool over when reading the menu.

Of course being by the seaside could you try and resist Fish and Chips? Mark had Crispy Octopus & Calamari to start of which came with Paprika, schewan pepper and a lime dressing. He tucked into those quite nicely.

I chose the Gardener’s Board which included Humous. As you will know from my post 10 things you may not know about me I absolutely love humous so will always choose this if it is on the menu.

The Gardener’s board came with tzatziki, humous, goats cheese and beetroot & sukkah (This was absolutely delicious) with warm pitta bread. Oh what a great starter!

I was quite full from the pitta bread (I ate it all, it was that good) so I decided for my main I would go with Asparagus & Romesco Tart, the perfect added ingredient was the cashews because this added a crunch to the tart. The fine pastry just melted in the mouth and the aspargus was cooked to perfection. A great main meal for those like me who tend to eat a lot of bread before hand.

Mark went for (of course) beer battered fish and chips! The batter was super crispy exactly how a battered fish should be. He throughly enjoyed dipping his chips in the mushy peas and tartare sauce.

It looked so tasty, smelt delicious and the atmosphere was perfect. A lovely afternoon in a busy city but the world just past us by whilst we enjoyed good food and each other’s company.

We couldn’t eat another bite because we were so stuffed! The desserts all looked so great on the menu. However, If I could have squeezed more food in, I would have chosen the Cherry Bakewell tart with amoretto ice cream.

Not only does The Walrus offer great food, this multi storey building has a two-storey roof top garden too.

Literally a few minutes walk from the seafront it’s the perfect location to come and enjoy a different side to Brighton. You can find the Walrus at Ship Street not too far from the lanes also.
