6 ways to overcome self-doubt in business

Postive Changes

Everyone at some point in their life experiences self-doubt, entrepreneurs are no way exempt from those feelings. If business owners don’t act quickly and supress those feelings of doubt, it could lead to bad decision making which in turn can be quite costly.

Our minds are incredibly powerful but to shift those negative thoughts into positive ones it requires courage and confidence. Here are a few tips that helped me when I started my journey in Business.

Don’t worry about what others think

This goes without saying for most scenario’s in life but even more so when you are building a profitable business. Remember that everyone has an opinion. If you have done your research well and understand your market, let your head decide the best approach.

Be with like-minded positive people

Perhaps you could start with choosing a mentor with business experience. This will allow you to discuss your plans and share your creative thoughts with someone who has appropriate experience. A mentor will guide you and offer support when you need it. Also, networking is a great way to motivate your mind and quash those self-doubt thoughts. The majority of people you meet while attending networking events are in the same boat as you and are still growing their business, so use them as a sounding board. Most events are free and can be found through sites such as Event Brite (www.eventbrite.co.uk).

Keep busy

Many tasks can seem a little overwhelming therefore it’s so important to take time out for yourself to recharge. Sometimes when you are engrossed in activity and what you are trying to achieve, it can be difficult to see smarter ways around things. Break Out – do something else, go for a run, watch a movie, do something else take that break from the day to day grind.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

Have fun!

A question I ask myself often, ‘What does my life look like to other people?’. Some people think because I have a business, life must be absolutely fabulous, well, it’s far from it, with my mind active my entire waking life, juggling lots of tasks, it’s tough. You will prevail! But remember, there’s no dress rehearsal in life….Don’t forget to have some fun.

Embrace Change

Change is inevitable. Indeed, change can provide a budding entrepreneur with their greatest opportunities. It is absolutely normal to have an element of self-doubt. Do you think for one second that Christopher Columbus had no doubts before he set sail for America, not actually knowing that it existed! Errrr NO! I’m prepared to bet that he was ‘bricking it’. Seek out change, make it your ally.

You are not alone

Being in business for yourself is not for the faint hearted, it has the ability to affect all aspects of your life. It can sometimes lead you to feeling isolated and alone but, you are not alone. Lean on your mentor, discuss things with family, but in the end make your own choices.

One of THE most relevant quotes, that I carry around in my sometimes messy mind is this one, from one of the most famous actors of the last century.

“Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” John Wayne (1907-1970)

Dedicated to my love, my best friend and my forever.

Thank you Mark, my biggest fan, the one who champions my dreams and passions.

You reassure me when I go through the phases of self-doubt.

I soak up your knowledge like a sponge (which is POWER by the way, my English literature teacher taught me that and I’ll never forget it) and I’ll carry the things you’ve taught me always.

The smartest man I’ll ever meet. I love you and thank you for your support. x
